In 1989, the printing industry ceased to be licensed. The printing industry was entering the new period composed of 34 state-owned enterprises under the [then] Ministry of Culture and the Arts, 20 enterprises subordinate to other central ministries (the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Finance), and 16 companies which were owned by the Workers’ Publishing Cooperative RSW „Prasa – Książka – Ruch”. This number was complemented by 40 plants operating as cooperatives and about 1,500 privately-owned printing houses which were granted licenses to conduct printing business by the Ministry of Culture and Art. The past twenty-five years of the development of the printing sector, and basically of its complete restoration, needs a summary and an assessment. The conclusions of the assessment should be conducive to the future development of the sector.
